Doncaster Rovers have released fans thousands of free tickets for their key relegation match against Crystal Palace on Good Friday.

Officials are offering up to 8,000 free tickets for the “must win” game at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The club’s website said the tickets were available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rovers are currently five points above the Championship relegation zone and one place ahead of Palace.

Doncaster chairman John Ryan said the cost of giving away the tickets was not an issue for the club, and what they want is the town behind the team for the clash.

He said: “Please come down to the Keepmoat Stadium and help us ensure that we are playing Championship football next season.

“I will be there on Friday afternoon in the Polypipe Stand beating the drum to brew up an electric atmosphere.

“Whether you are a man, woman or child you will not have to pay for your match ticket for the encounter with Crystal Palace.”

The tickets are restricted to two per supporter although tickets will be available for families.

Please see their website for details: http://www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/page/News/0,,10329~2341286,00.html

Up to 25,000 jobs could be created in South Yorkshire with £18m of government cash being ploughed into projects which will bring “major economic growth”.

Doncaster Council and private sector partners have won a bid for the Gateway to the Sheffield City Region project.

It includes building a link road between Doncaster Robin Hood Airport and the M18 and the reclamation of Rossington Colliery.

Peter Dale, from the council, said it was tremendous news for the area.

The grant from the government’s regional growth fund is the largest to any local authority in the country.

‘Transformative effect’

It will also fund plans to build a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange near junction three of the M18.

A planning application for the project, which is also being funded by private sector contributions, is expected to be submitted by the end of the year with the scheme estimated to start in summer 2012.

The Labour-controlled council said it anticipated a total of 25,000 private sector jobs would be created by 2030 as a result of the project.

They would include jobs in areas such as air freight, warehousing, house building and civil engineering.

Mr Dale, the council’s director of regeneration and environment, said: “The council and its private sector partners fully support the project and will continue to work together to deliver the benefits it will bring for Doncaster and the whole region.”

Nigel Brewster, Doncaster Chamber president, said the development of the new link road – the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme – would have a “transformative effect” on the whole region.

It is expected the road would make access much easier for passengers and freight companies.

Mr Brewster said: “We must now capitalise on this excellent news by encouraging more local businesses to trade internationally and also by encouraging new investors to locate on the airport business park and other key sites within the city region that can equally take advantage of the airport.”

THE last iconic Vulcan bomber has returned to Doncaster – and talks are under way to make Finningley its permanent home.

The aircraft XH558 touched down at Robin Hood Airport yesterday afternoon, and the former Cold War bomber will be based there for the next six months while it performs at air shows around the UK.

But the charity which runs the aircraft, Vulcan to the Sky Trust, is in negotiations with Robin Hood Airport and Doncaster Council’s investment arm Invest in Doncaster, about the possibility of developing a permanent visitor centre. An announcement on a longer term arrangement is expected to be made in the next month.

The aircraft flew in from RAF Lyneham, which had been its previous base, and circled around the airport once before touching down on the runway for the first time since the last RAF Finningley air show in 1992.

The aircraft was previously based at Finningley when the site was a nuclear bomber base in the 1960s.

Pilot Martin Withers said he thought Doncaster would be a perfect long-term home for the aircraft.

“Touching down at Finningley was one of the most emotional experiences of my life,” he said.

Vulcan to the Sky Trust chief executive Dr Robert Pleming said the move to Doncaster would mean more public access to the aircraft, which could potentially help the charity raise the £2 million a year it needs to keep the plane in the sky: “We’ve been working with Robin Hood Airport for two years to get it here.

“Ourselves, the airport and Doncaster Council are all working towards this being something we can arrange for the long term.”

The council is putting no money into the project.

The aircraft is expected to be flying until 2013 or 2014. Work may be carried out to extend its flying life beyond that. Meanwhile, the Vulcan is expected to attend 30 air shows this year.

The director of Robin Hood Airport, Mike Morton said the Vulcan’s presence at the airport would be a major boost: “It’s a great advert for the airport and the Sheffield City Region as a whole. It has not been finalised what will happen in the long term, but we are its base for the summer months and are looking to it being here over the winter.

“It will be outside for a couple of weeks until a hangar can be sorted out.

“There’s a viewing area in the terminal where people can get a bite to eat and see a Vulcan bomber.”

Chris Dungworth, of Invest in Doncaster, said he hoped the Vulcan would bring visitors from all over the country and that it would encourage children to learn about science and engineering.

Labour leader Ed Miliband is to marry his long-term partner, and mother of his two children, Justine on 27 May.

Mr Miliband, 41, proposed to Justine Thornton, 40, last year on Primrose Hill near their North London home.

He told BBC News older brother David, who he beat to the Labour leadership last year, was “delighted” by the news.

Ed, who was best man at David’s 1998 wedding, has said there will be no best man or bridesmaids at May’s ceremony in Nottingham.

But he said David and his violinist wife Louise were the first to be invited and David was “the person I told after my mother”.

Speaking outside his North London home, with Justine at his side, Mr Miliband said: “This is something that has been on our minds for some time,” adding the wedding would be a “fun” day for “family and close friends”

Mr Miliband, who is MP for Doncaster, told The Doncaster Free Press it was “the right time” for the couple to tie the knot and that it would be a “small ceremony” at Langar Hall hotel near Nottingham, not far from where Ms Thornton grew up, followed by a honeymoon in an undisclosed location.

“This is going to be a fantastic day for us both and I feel incredibly privileged to be marrying someone so beautiful and who is such a special person,” he told the newspaper.

“It’s the right time for us to do this and I’m really looking forward to a lovely day. We’re going to have a party in Doncaster when we get back from honeymoon – which will be in an undisclosed location,” he said.

“At the end of the day we’re in our 40s and we’ve got two kids – so it wasn’t a case of me suddenly popping the question. This is just something we think is right for us.”

There might be a “low key” stag night though, he disclosed.

Ed Miliband: “I think people are pretty relaxed (about marital status)”

Ms Thornton said: “Ed wasn’t even an MP when I met him and at the end of the day I am marrying him because of who he is and not because of what he’s doing now.

“We’re planning on a small ceremony, all at the hotel with everything at the same place and we’re looking forward to it very much.”

He has said previously that he would get married, but political events such as the Copenhagen climate change summit and the general and leadership elections had “got in the way”.

Mr Miliband’s position as an unmarried father became an issue after his election as Labour leader in September last year.

The bride and groom-to-be already have two children – 21-month-old Daniel and four-month-old Samuel.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast after his election as leader, Mr Miliband said: “I think marriage is a very important institution, but there are stable families that aren’t married and stable families that are married.

“My love for Justine is profound and we’re a very close unit, and we’re very much looking forward to the birth of our second child.”

Asked whether he felt being married would be important if he were to become prime minister, he said: “I think people are pretty relaxed about this.

“I don’t think people care one way or the other about what other people do in their lives as long as they show responsibility to each other.”

The new Labour leader was even offered the opportunity last September to propose to Ms Thornton live on ITV’s Daybreak programme, but declined.

“I think it’s better to do it in person, really,” he said.

“I don’t think it would exactly bring out my romantic side to propose on Daybreak, but thanks for the offer anyway.”

A failed environmental visitor attraction in South Yorkshire has been sold by a council to become an activity centre for school children.

The Earth Centre opened in 1999 on the site of a former colliery at Denaby at a cost of £55m, but was closed in 2004 after failing to attract enough people.

Now the site has been sold for an undisclosed sum to an educational firm.

The firm, Kingswood, hopes to create 200 jobs including apprenticeship schemes for local colleges.

Doncaster Council said Kingswood had agreed a “substantial subsidy” for schools in the area to make the proposed site accessible to local children and young people.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “I am delighted to welcome Kingswood to Doncaster, this is a very exciting development for the borough and will further strengthen our offer to visitors.

Educational facilities”Their winning bid represents a unique and natural continuation of the site’s heritage as a centre for learning, focused on environmental sustainability and targeting young people.

“I am particularly pleased that Kingswood has committed to a subsidy for schools in the Doncaster area to ensure that local children and young people will be able to access the exciting educational facilities the site has to offer.”

Councillor Jonathan Wood, who is responsible for business and regeneration, said: “Throughout this process we have said that whoever takes on this site needs a business model that is sustainable without any injection of public money.

“Kingswood has a proven track record as a successful business both in the UK and Europe.

“The company will run the 50-acre site as a wholly private business, creating jobs and opportunities for local people.”

In February last year, Doncaster council revealed it was spending £200,000 a year to maintain the 20-hectare (50-acre) site.

It was put up for sale in October.

In October this year local guys, Tony Hockey and a friend have decided to do a charity bike ride from Doncaster to Great Yarmouth. It’s in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’ and they are doing it to give back to those who give so much for so little. They plan to stop off at military bases along the way and will also be stopping in towns and villages en route to raise money.

The route takes in 175 miles and their target is to raise £10,000, so please give generously.

Donations can be made at http://www.justgiving.com/donny2yarmouth and they also have a facebook page on http://www.facebook.com/pages/Doncaster-2-Great-yarmouth/142010599198710?sk=wall
